The UK government has asked broadband providers to help ensure vulnerable customers have access to emergency services during power outages.

Example: Virgin Media is providing those who need it a device with its own battery that allows the landline phone to connect to mobile phone services.

Note: experience tells us that some broadband providers are more helpful than others in this regard :(

This was our experience until we recently changed broadband provider.

Digital phone services only work when you re connected to the Internet.

The connection is broken when your broadband provider changes your IP (internet protocol) address.

2G and 3G service in the UK are in the process of being phased out.

"The copper phone network supports thousands of personal alarms and home monitoring systems that allow disabled people and those who are older or have health problems to access help if they need it. There are 1.8 million people using these telecare devices in the UK."
