St Michael's Church in North Rode approached us to ask if we would update their old Joomla! CMS website to the latest available release.

They also asked us to create a customised version of the default template included with the Joomla! CMS.

This case study outlines our approach to creating a website design to meet the church's needs, including compliance with WCAG Accessibility Guidelines at Level AA.

Our Approach

When the church asked us to upgrade their old Joomla! CMS website we first of all installed the latest available release of Joomla! CMS on a server with restricted access (limited to the church and ourselves) to facilitate collaboration during the website design process.

We then customised the default Joomla! CMS Content Structure (categories, articles and modules) and Navigation Structure (menus and menu links) to meet the church's needs.

Finally, we created a customised version of the default Joomla! CMS Template, incorporating the design elements described in this case study, to project the church's website and brand across the widest possible range of devices (phones, tablets and PCs) and screen sizes.

Our aim: to create a responsive website design that is accessible to the widest possible audience.

In our view a Responsive Website Design is one which:

  • looks great across a wide range of devices regardless of screen size,
  • is accessible to the widest possible audience,
  • enables you to quickly and easily change website content, branding and appearance.

Template Customisation

Here are some of the changes we made to the default Joomla! CMS Template to meet the needs of the church.

Brand

The church wanted a Site Banner to be displayed across the full width of their website in Landscape View.

And a Site Title to be displayed at the top in Portrait View on small screen devices.

Display Format

The church initially opted for a Full Width website display, meaning their website fills the screen width on all screen sizes.

Font Family

The church chose to continue using the font family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif.

Images

The church chose to display all images in their website in full colour with squared corners.

Screen

The church opted for their website to be displayed in browsers against a white background.

Text Size

The church opted not to change the default Text Size and Letter Spacing.
